Ingredients

  • 1 rack pork ribs
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1tbs liquid smoke
  • 3tbs apple juice (or other flavorful liquid, like whisky, vinegar, wine, beers)
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce

Instructions

  • Note: Authentic BBQ requires long cooking times in a smoker. This recipe uses an oven and aims to recreate the authentic experience.
  • Preheat the oven to 300°F.
  • Remove the membrane or sliver skin from the back of the ribs if needed.
  • Mix brown sugar, paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne.
  • Rub the seasoning over both sides of the ribs.
  • Partially wrap ribs in foil, then add liquid smoke and apple juice. Then tightly wrap in foil and bake until tender, about an hour.
  • Unwrap, and broil at 500° till surface sizzles. Do not leave unmonitored as the broiler is very, very hot. Baste with bbq sauce on sizzling meat briefly until sticky and caramelized. Turn off the broiler and remove it as soon as safe.
  • Let cool, cut out individual ribs, and serve.
